Chinese New Year wrapped up the same weekend Young's parents arrived in town, so our first outing was to Chinatown to celebrate in the festivities.
If you have ever been to Chinatown, it's full of trinket shops that you wonder, "who would ever buy this?" Here is one example...a bench with a monkey on it! We had a little fun with the kids on this one...
The children made paper lanterns in school similar to these. Cameron was so excited to see all the lanterns hanging that looked just like hers! It's fun to see them relate what they are learning in their school to "everyday life." (although it's not everyday we go to Chinatown.) They recognized several Chinese characters on store signs, knew some of the objects in Chinese and were able to say a few simple Chinese words to our waitress at lunch. When Cameron went back to school that following day, she was excited to tell her teach that we went to China!
Ninja tattoos and balloon! (By far the kid's favorite booth that day)
There was lots of music and entertainment to watch. which looked amazing. I was super excited for the dragon dance, but once it started, it totally scared Timo and Cameron. I think it's because the drums were so loud. We then tried to watch the an all girls dance group but they set off some firecrackers first which sent Cameron into hysterics. Oh well. We decided to finish off our festival with a traditional Chinese lunch. In celebrating Chinese New Year at school, the children were served a traditional Chinese lunch...which included dumplings. These are now Cameron's most requested food! That's all she asked for once we stepped in the restaurant..."dump-a-lings"
And Timo just wanted to finish all his lunch so he could crack open his fortune cookie!
We're so happy that Harmony and Habachi are here to visit, we missed them so much!
