We spent Memorial Day hanging out with our friends the Hirzels. We met for breakfast and then decided to tackle the Hiller Aviation Museum, just south of SF. It's a great little museum for your little ones who LOVE airplanes (Timo). It is small and only took us about an hour or so to go through, but a nice way to leisurely enjoy the rainy/cloudy holiday.
Lot's of aircraft to climb in and out of...the kids really loved the flight simulator. Daddy was a much better pilot than I was.
There was a cockpit of a Blue Angels plan...Timo was estatic! His dream is to be a Blue Angel pilot. He and Cameron have it all worked out...he will fly her out to the dessert so she can dig up dinosaur bones and then go fly his air show...coming back to pick her up when he is done. Sounds like a perfect plan to me.
Outside was the front portion of a huge plane, not sure what the name was. You could go inside, sit in the cockpit and lounge in the upstairs first class. Lastly we stood in the viewing area watching the small planes land and take off.
A side note as Memorial Day, I was trying to explain what the holiday was all about to Timo and Cameron. I knew Timo would be attracted to it right away because of the soldiers. He has a camouflage shirt and pair of pants but has never worn them together as an out fit but he wanted to dress up in his "soldier clothes" that day as a way to honor our US Soldiers. We also passed by the Golden Gate National Cemetery on our way to the museum and there was a ceremony going on to honor our fallen heroes. The children were full of questions and we tried to explain the purpose of Memorial Day and they seemed to connect some of the dots. It's important to me that they truly understand the importance of our history and the sacrifice. I hope by next year we can attend one of these ceremonies and perhaps place the flags on the graves of our fallen heroes.
